Eileen Power – historian

Eileen Edna LePoer Power was a well known British historian and writer, active at the turn of the 20th century and beyond.  She was the eldest of three daughters of Philip Ernest Le Poer Power of Atrincham – a market town in Greater Manchester.

Eileen PowerDuring her time at Cambridge University, she was prominent in the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. She also studied at the University of Paris and the École des Chartes.  Her most famous book, Medieval People, was published in 1924. In 1927, Power founded the Economic History Review. In 1933 she helped establish an organization that helped academics fleeing from Nazi Germany.
