Michael “Doc” Powers – baseball star

docpowersMike Riley “Doc” Powers was a famous American baseball player active at the turn of the 20th century.  He was an outstanding catcher in the American League playing for the Louisville Colonels, Washington Senators and New York Highlanders (now known as the Yankees!)

A qualified physician, he sustained internal injuries from a collision with a wall during a baseball game and died thirteen days later from complications arising from related surgery. He has the unenviable title of being the first Major League player to suffer an on-field injury that led to his death.
